Students who practice crucial phonics-based skills during the summer, will be prepared to stay on track with instruction during the coming school year. Schools and districts can choose from a 4-, 6-, or 8-week program tailored to reading beginners, struggling readers, and English language learners. One program meets the needs of K–3rd-graders, and another supports 4th grade and up. Each is designed to engage students 3 to 6 days a week for 60 minutes a day. Educators can deliver the program virtually via any platform they prefer. There are even offline resources available to students with limited internet access. “For more than 35 years, Reading Horizons has created and combined digital and classroom resources to provide engaging reading instruction based on the science of reading,” Reading Horizons’ CEO Tyson Smith said. “We have worked hard to adapt our resources into practical solutions for virtual learning because summer reading programs are crucial to limiting the impact of the ‘COVID-19 slide.’ Our program was created to help combat the academic effects that are heightened for those who are economically disadvantaged or who are already behind their peers in reading.” The virtual summer reading programs include both free and paid tools. Educators and parents can access the free tools on the virtual classroom portal starting at the end of May 2020. Schools and districts can take advantage of the online software portion for assessment, progress-monitoring, student accountability, and additional student practice.
