Hubspot vs. Mailchimp: Which is better for your marketing team?

January 29, 2019

 By: Amber Bullis

In many of pop culture’s most iconic debates, there are very clear winners in my book. Humor me for a moment.

Pepsi vs. Coke: Coke, without a doubt. Pepsi tastes like it’s pretending to be Coke.

Friends vs. Seinfeld: Sorry, Kramer. Your funny man role can’t stand up to Chandler Bing.

PC vs. Mac: Once you go Mac, you won’t go back.

Mario vs. Sonic: Find me searching for fire flowers and jumping into pipes.

Pacey vs. Dawson: Tell me this love triangle still matters. Team Pacey.

HubSpot versus MailChimp

There are some debates in marketing that can inspire just as much emotion and discussion.

Content Marketing vs. Traditional Marketing: One look at the work we do at PRP and the success we’ve had for the members of our client family easily answers this question. (Content is king!)

Sales vs. Marketing: Lots of interesting conversations can happen on this one. We’ve covered a few of them in our past blog posts. I suggest you start with The Sales vs. Marketing Struggle: Your Prospects Need You Both.

At PRP we are often asked to weigh in on debates that aren’t quite as clear-cut, such as insight on “the best” marketing tools. Sometimes, there are no clear winners.

Our answer about marketing tools is often, “Well, it depends.” This is no Pacey vs. Dawson, folks.

Today we’re going to dive into two platforms that support email marketing that we are asked about often: Hubspot and Mailchimp. Hopefully the information here will help you decide which platform might win the debate for your organization.

Hubspot vs. Mailchimp

Hubspot and Mailchimp are two marketing platforms that include tools to organize, send, and analyze emails.

Hubspot is a powerful marketing automation platform with robust tools to help you successfully execute inbound marketing strategies. Essentially, Hubspot's email tools are a part of their bigger marketing services.

Mailchimp is a marketing platform focused on tools to run email campaigns.

The Benefits

Both Platforms have:

  • Intuitive, very easy-to-navigate platforms;

  • The ability to conduct A/B testing;

  • Simple form builders;

  • Landing page options;

  • A variety of email templates to choose from, and the option to create your own templates;

  • Email automation options; and

  • Hundreds of integrations.

Hubspot Benefits

  • Hubspot can help you manage all of your marketing needs, including in-depth lead segmenting, social media management, landing page creation, advanced tools for content creation, in-depth and live reporting, and more.

  • Sophisticated and complex email automation allows you to segment based on very specific prospect or customer behaviors.

  • A comprehensive educational community helps businesses excel in inbound marketing through an array of courses, certifications, and forum boards.

Mailchimp Benefits

  • With less sophisticated marketing tools, Mailchimp is cheaper and doesn’t require a contract.

  • If all you need is a tool for email marketing or simple marketing tools for your small business, Mailchimp is an easy-to-use, intuitive solution.

The Winner

In the end, you’ll need to consider the goals for your business and marketing department to determine which solution makes the most sense. Hubspot is a more powerful marketing automation platform that can track leads and segment prospects into their respective pipelines. It’s an all-in-one inbound marketing solution, with a price that reflects it. Mailchimp is an excellent and affordable marketing platform focused on email campaigns, if that’s all you need.
