Community and small college libraries are increasingly facing budget constraints, requiring them to find innovative ways to do more with less. The most recent ACRL Academic Library Trends and Statistics Survey found that library budgets for materials have slightly increased since the pandemic; however, they often are not increasing at the same pace as the cost of the materials they are earmarked to buy.
This is a key reason why maximizing usage of database collections is becoming essential for small and community college libraries. The cost-saving benefits of subscribing to a large database collection can help academic libraries maximize their budgets while still fulfilling the library’s primary role of helping students and faculty access the resources they need.
